The Harvard Art Museums consist of three museums in one, with superb international collections ranging from ancient Chinese Bronzes, Greek vases, and ancient Mediterranean artworks, to one of the finest collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings in any American museum. Harvard, through gifts and purchases, has amassed a collection of 250,000 objects from around the world, spanning 7,000 years of art. Dr. McDonald will take a look at some of the highlights of the collections, and also provide a ‘behind the scenes’ perspective on the recent massive renovation and reinstallation of this storied collection. The current building, a renovation of the Fogg Museums, designed by Renzo Piano, is a jewel box which allows the serene viewing of extraordinary art, and houses a conservation lab, research center, and teaching facilities that are unparalleled in the university world.consist of three museums in one, with superb international collections ranging from ancient Chinese Bronzes, Greek vases, and ancient Mediterranean artworks, to one of the finest collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings in any American museum.
